Ecumenical Overreach: Dolan's Ash Wednesday-Ramadan Comparison

Ash Wednesday is kind of our Catholic Ramadan, so let's unite with our Islamic brothers and sisters in prayer and fasting." Cardinal Timothy Dolan.

In a recent message, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, referred to Ramadan as a "season of penance" for Muslims and likened it to the Christian observance of Ash Wednesday, suggesting that both traditions emphasize fasting and prayer. He further encouraged unity in prayer and fasting with "our Islamic brothers and sisters."

This rhetoric is not uncommon and aligns with the broader ecumenical movement, which seeks to promote unity among diverse religious traditions. While fostering mutual respect is commendable, such comparisons can blur the distinct theological boundaries that define each faith. In my article "Breaking Faith: The Scriptural Warning Against Ecumenism," I raise concerns about the ecumenical movement's potential to undermine the exclusivity of Christ's atonement by promoting the idea of universal salvation through various religious traditions.

While both Ash Wednesday and Ramadan involve elements of fasting and spiritual reflection, their theological foundations and purposes differ significantly. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a period of repentance, reflection, and preparation for Resurrection Sunday, commemorating Christ's sacrifice and resurrection. In contrast, Ramadan is observed by Muslims as a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad. Recognizing these differences is crucial to maintaining the integrity of each faith tradition while engaging in interfaith dialogues.

While the Catholic institution does not align with biblical Christianity, that does not mean there are no true believers within it. I firmly believe that many sincere Christians practice Catholicism, despite its doctrinal differences. Let’s pray that those within the Catholic institution have their eyes opened to the truth and come to a saving faith in Jesus, if they have not already. Likewise, let’s lift up those in Islam, asking that they turn from their beliefs and place their full trust in Jesus Christ as their Savior. READ MORE
